Blond Joke

A Pretty Blond Female approaches the counter at the Library. The librarian acknowledges her and asks, “How may I help you today, mam?” The Pretty Blond replies, “I will have a French Fries, a Burger, and a Milk Shake please.” The Librarian is puzzled, looks side to side to see if anyone else is reacting to this question, then responds “Mam, this is a Library.” The Blond hesitates for a moment then responds in a whisper, “I’ll have a French Fries, a Burger, and a Milk Shake please.”

Debunking Misconceptions

Here is an excerpt from a report :  Sexual Victimization in Prisons and Jails Reported by Inmates, 2008-09

ƒƒ Most victims of staff sexual misconduct were males; most
perpetrators were females. Among male victims of staff, those in jails reported sexual activity with female staff. An
additional 16% of prison inmates and 18% of jail inmates
reported sexual activity with both female and male staff.

The report is available here: http://bjs.ojp.usdoj.gov/content/pub/pdf/svpjri0809.pdf

So, our society would have you believe that men are the pervs (all of us), and women are always the victim. This report seems to show that, not only are women just as invested in rape as men are, they are leading the category. This actually is not surprising considering that women staff in prisons are given a higher level of authority over male prisoners than male staff in female prisons. Female prison guards are allowed to do strip searches including pat downs on male prisoners and in most cases any where and anytime they choose. Male staff are usually not even allowed to be present when female prisoners are strip searched and usually female strip searches are done in a private area out of view of anyone else. Just more examples of the horrible double standard that exists exacerbated by the misreporting in media and the misrepresentation in shows on TV and film. Additionally, the report shows that the majority of victims in female prisons are assaulted by another female prisoner, making the number of female perpetrators soar even higher. To give these reports real numbers as extrapolated from the table on page 23, there were 43,455 male inmates assaulted by staff in prison or jail, of those, 67.6% were assaulted by a female staffer alone, and 16.6% were assaulted by a female staffer and a male staffer together. So of the 53,455 male inmates included in the report, 17,323 were assaulted by a Male Staff and 50,134 were assaulted by a Female Staff. Even more surprising, of the 3,608 female inmates included in the report, 1,192 were assaulted by a Male Staff and 3,552 were assaulted by a Female Staff. Combined, of the 57,063 prisoners, 18,515 were assaulted by a Male Staffer and 53,686 were assaulted by a Female Staffer. Shockingly, the percentage of Female Staff perpetrators is the same whether it is a Male Inmate or Female Inmate. Tell me that result is what everyone expected based on the way Hollywood writes the scripts for their TV shows and the media reports on crimes.

Joke

Read a funny joke today:

Attending a wedding for the first time, a little girl whispered to her mother, “why is the bride dressed in white?” “Because white is the color of happiness,” her mother explained. “And today is the happiest day in her life.” The child thought about this for a moment. “So why is the groom wearing black?”

Crafty Dames

I was reading the updates on my Linked-In account. One of the people who used to work for a company I used to work for started a company doing marketing using social media. I thought I would read more. I went to her linked-in page. After reading some, I saw a list of interests she had. I like to know more about the people I do business with so I took a look. There was a link to a blog she was subscribed to called Crafty Dames. Title from there page: Dickless Artists Making Everything Swell is a San Antonio based, feminist crafting society. Now, if a guy created a post similar but opposite of that for men, wouldn’t we be labeled a sexist and berated by every female that ran across the site? I quickly deleted her from my Linked-In account. No Soup for You!

Double Standard for Wage Earners

We got into an argument over the weekend about needing to earn more money. I earn a pretty good income and occasionally it fluctuates with the company’s cash flow. In addition, the company pays some of our personal expenses as business expenses so that should count towards my contribution but it doesn’t appear so (truck payment, all cell phones, some personal credit cards). We even paid a large settlement on a credit debt using company money which resulted in additional income tax passed through to us from the company which falls on me. I work an average of 70+ hours per week. A while back my wife quit her job at a public school to go to work at a private school for 1/2 the wages. While I was asked for my opinion, it really wasn’t a situation where I had any influence. Additionally she is taking night classes and accumulating student loan debt that we will have to pay off. The problem comes in that when there is a larger stack of bills than there is money in the bank, suddenly I get attacked for not making enough. Why can’t I go to work for someone else and get a real job.

Why is it that women get to select the type of work they want to do based on personal preference and not on income and we guys don’t? And then we are expected to work extra hours or get a second job to help make ends meet while they claim to be the victim of the glass ceiling and unequal opportunity and unequal pay? And then after we work all those extra hours they complain that we don’t help them out as much as they want us to with the laundry and the dishes? How often do they help us out with the outdoor chores? Fixing the car? Going out in the cold of winter to dig up a water pipe and repair it? fix a roof leak? And my biggest objection? While I am out doing the man’s job of fixing something around the house, she is watching Fringe or House, or some chick flick with a bunch of half naked 25 year old gay males who just so represent a cross section of the male population and are not being objectified in the least.

Can you say double standard!

Edit Updates

I was able a few weeks ago to find an update to PHP POS. I loaded the latest version. I then visited the forums. I found a script where someone had asked the forum about an inventory report showing valuation of current inventory. I loaded the changes into my copy of the program. It worked really well and was a very simple few lines. I think I may be able to follow that example to write the 2 reports Mary needs for her store. I will still need to figure out how to separate the discounted customers from the regular customers, but that functionality may already exist in the script. Enough for now…

Online Store

I am trying to setup an online store. I did some research looking for free online stores and shopping carts. I installed OS Commerce, Agora Cart, Shopsite, and PHP Coin. What a mess. You need to be a bit knowledgeable on Databases to start. Make sure you record the database info you create including the database name, user name, password, path, and the default user name and password from the script install. Also, when you create the database, make a note of any additional database files the script creates on your server.

I tried installing MySQL, Apache, etc. on my machine to run as a service to assist in editing the configuration info. Wow, another place you need to be an expert! I am having all kinds of trouble making the MySQL stay running/connected. Same goes for Apache. I probably need to start over and keep more notes. If I get it running right, I will post my notes here. **Update** I stopped the services and restarted them, eventually I got all of them running. Also, I am using an Apache Distribution called XAMPP (Ver. 1.7.4) from http://www.ApacheFriends.org/en.

I created an account with 2CheckOut.com. It is a bit expensive on the commission rate, but there are no recurring fees. I have a Link Point Gateway which I need to find the info on, but then I will need to get a Merchant Account which will come with monthly recurring fees. 2CheckOut costs $49.00 to register and they take a 5.5% + .45 swipe rate. They require you to have a store online that they approve of. They don’t tell you that before you go online to sign up.

I am going to try to integrate 2CheckOut into the Shopsite Store. I need to find out if they have scripts to integrate it. I will see how that goes.

So Long For Now….

Update 2-20-2011

So I was able to use 2 Checkout to get paid on an invoice by a customer using a Federal Payment Card. Invoices paid by the end of the day Wednesday are supposed to be entered for payment on Thursday, show up as pending at the Bank on Friday, and clear by Saturday Morning. So far, my client has paid invoices on Thursday which adds a week to the time to clear the bank. We will see going forward how it works for midweek payments.

One thing they did not explain clearly enough was that they will be holding back a 5% reserve on every payment. The reserve will be paid out 90 days after the payment clears. It is supposed to be so they can have a reserve money account to pay charge-backs and other problems from the vendor. I think it really is just a way to make interest on the 60 day float. They put all the reserves in an interest bearing Money Market account and make interest on the balance based on the daily balance.

I am not real happy about the 5.5% plus .45 fee but I will get more conventional if the payments continue significantly or as more clients want to pay this way. I need to increase fees a little bit to cover the fees for this type of activity.

So long for now…

Update 5-1-2011

I did some changes to the PHP Point of Sale to add a report. I used instructions given by another user on the forum. It worked.  I can use this example to create additional reports as I get time and understanding of the reports needed. It should be easy enough to add a button for “End of Month Reports”, enter or select the month, and have it spit out the reports.I later installed an update to PHP Point of Sale (11.2). When I did this, I lost my new reports. I still have the notes so I should be able to manually add the report again. Subsequent to that, the author of PHP Point of Sale decided to switch to a charge for the program model. I think this is because they were not getting enough donations and were working hard to do updates that were being requested. I had not donated yet either, mostly because i had not finished getting the program where it needed to be to stay in production. I did plan on making a donation once it was decided to stay with PHP Point of Sale. As for now, it is orphaned to the latest version people have downloaded. I think I have 11.5 downloaded somewhere. I did some downloads and they were pushing changes fast right before they changed to a pay model and closed the forum and download sections. I am sure it will pop up with the older versions available for download, especially since they were released under the GNU license for free public distribution. I am going to take a break on PHP Point of Sale while I take a free online tutorial on PHP and MySQL. (http://www.homeandlearn.co.uk/php/php.html)
